Apply two different adjustments
With two Exhaustion levels under the 2024 D&D rules, subtract 4 from a D20 Test and reduce Speed by 10 feet. These are separate calculations, not one number applied in two places.
The official 2024 Exhaustion rule reduces D20 Tests by twice the Exhaustion level and Speed by five feet per level. Confirm your table’s edition before using this example; it does not use the 2014 effects table.
Keep the origin of each number
Suppose a fictional character has a Speed of 30 feet and an applicable modifier of +5. They roll 14 on this D20 Test and have two Exhaustion levels. We are not deriving those values from a class or a real character.
| Example record | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| D20 Test penalty | 2 × 2 | −4 |
| Test total | 14 + 5 − 4 | 15 |
| Speed reduction | 5 × 2 | 10 feet |
| Speed with this effect | 30 − 10 | 20 feet |
The total of 15 still needs the relevant difficulty or comparison to determine an outcome. And 20 feet is the example’s adjusted Speed, not the movement remaining after travelling during a turn.
A useful sheet review note
DnD Dynamic Sheet documents abilities, movement, counters and notes. You could prepare: “2024: Exhaustion 2; D20 Tests −4; base Speed 30, with effect 20.” This is a suggested manual record, not app output or a promise that the app detects or applies the condition automatically.
Before adjusting a total, check whether someone already included the penalty. Incorporating it in the calculation and subtracting it again would duplicate the adjustment. Keep a reference to the base value so the change can be reconstructed.
When the level changes, review both calculations
In the cited rule, finishing a Long Rest removes one Exhaustion level. If our example drops from two to one, the penalty becomes −2 and the Speed reduction becomes 5 feet: with the same base of 30, Speed would be 25 feet. Check other effects and table rules before considering the entire character updated.
DnD Dynamic Sheet is available as a paid Windows beta for one device, with initial online activation and local data. Review the product demonstrations and prepare a condition note before the next turn.
