Double proficiency, not the entire sum
In this guide’s example, the ability modifier is +2 and the Proficiency Bonus is +2. A proficient skill adds +4. If an applicable Expertise rule doubles that Proficiency Bonus, the sum becomes +6: 2 + (2 × 2). It does not become +8 by doubling everything.
The 2024 Basic Rules explain that proficiency is not added repeatedly to the same roll and that Expertise doubles that bonus for certain checks. Before applying the example, check your group’s rule and edition and whether it applies to that skill.
Write the parts of the calculation
These are authored example numbers, not a real character or a software test. We assume no other adjustments:
| Case | Skill-bonus calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Applicable proficiency | 2 ability modifier + 2 proficiency | +4 |
| Applicable Expertise | 2 ability modifier + 4 doubled proficiency | +6 |
If the die shows 11, the example totals are 15 and 17 respectively. Add the die after reconstructing the bonus. Do not add +4 and +6 together: they are alternative skill configurations, not cumulative benefits from appearing in the same table.
Check where your sheet’s number comes from
DnD Dynamic Sheet documents ability modifiers, skills, proficiency, Expertise, adjustments and fixed values. To review your character, identify the ability modifier, Proficiency Bonus and applicable skill state. Then check whether you also entered an adjustment or fixed total.
Do not manually add another proficiency just to produce the expected result. If something differs, write the calculation your rule should represent and inspect which input changes it. This guide does not specify exact control positions or assert that every calculation from an edition is automated.
For cases with additional effects, identify each modification by its source. This page’s unadjusted example does not decide whether those effects stack at your table.
Before continuing the game
Check one skill and retain the calculation with your reference. If you are comparing a fixed total with a calculation, also review how to distinguish them.
Consult current DnD Dynamic Sheet features and the product. It is a paid Windows x64 beta, independent of Wizards of the Coast. The sheet organises character information; it does not replace your group’s rules agreement.
