Critical hit: roll more dice, add the bonus only once

Double the damage dice, then add the modifier

If your attack normally deals 1d6+3, a critical uses 2d6+3: rolls of 4 and 2 total 9. Doubling the +3 as well would incorrectly give 12. The 2024 rule says to roll the attack’s damage dice twice, add them and include relevant modifiers as normal.

This example assumes the table already confirmed a critical hit and the attack deals exactly that damage, with no extra dice or effects. It neither changes your character’s bonus nor claims DnD Dynamic Sheet automatically calculates every rule.

Separate attack and damage rolls

The d20 used to resolve the attack is not this example’s six-sided damage die. After confirming the critical:

  1. Start with the normal expression: 1d6+3.
  2. Roll the damage dice twice: 2d6.
  3. Add the results: 4+2=6.
  4. Add the modifier once: 6+3=9.

This does not mean rolling the attack d20 again. Critical damage and advantage or reroll rules are separate decisions.

Record the result relevant to your character

DnD Dynamic Sheet brings hit points, actions, movement, counters and notes into a Windows character sheet. Its official facts suggest adjusting hit points after taking damage and marking used actions in turn tracking.

If your character made the attack, communicate the damage resolved by the table and record your action or resource when relevant. Do not subtract that damage from your own hit points. If your character received a critical, update their hit points after the game master confirms the applicable final damage.

The example’s nine points are the calculation for the specified attack, not guaranteed final damage against every creature. Resistances, other dice or special rules may require further steps; none are assumed here.

Check the rule before keeping an exception

The source is Critical Hits in Playing the Game, 2024 Basic Rules. If your table uses another edition or a house rule, agree it explicitly before adjusting the sheet.

DnD Dynamic Sheet’s presentation provides recordings to assess turns, cards and rests. It is a paid Windows beta with local data; initial activation needs Internet. It is not a shared tabletop and does not replace your table’s adjudication. Use the sheet to retain the agreed result after separating dice and modifier.
