You can decide after the first die
Completing a 2024 Short Rest lets you spend Hit Dice to regain HP; it does not automatically restore your maximum. You can decide whether to spend another after each roll. In DnD Dynamic Sheet, keep current HP separate from the resource you choose to spend.
The app documents HP, counters and notes. This guide proposes manual tracking rather than asserting that a button applies every character rule, feature or exception.
One rest, two decisions
A fictional example: you have 9 of 24 HP, two d8 Hit Dice available and a +2 Constitution modifier. Assume a valid Short Rest without additional features changing healing.
- Spend one die and roll 4: 4 + 2 = 6 HP regained. You reach 15 of 24, with one die available.
- Now decide whether to spend the second. If you do and roll 2, regain 4, reaching 19 of 24 with neither of those dice left.
You could stop at 15 and retain a die. Do not add both rolls before deciding the second spend, or mark maximum HP merely because the hour finished.
What the 2024 rule requires
The official glossary describes a Short Rest as one hour of limited activity and requires at least 1 HP to start. For each Hit Die spent, add your Constitution modifier and regain that total, with a minimum of 1 HP.
Rolling Initiative, casting a spell other than a cantrip or taking damage interrupts the rest and grants no benefits. Confirm the rest actually finished before applying this example’s healing. If your table uses another edition or a feature changes the procedure, review that rule first.
Update two sheet values
After each confirmed spend, adjust current HP and note remaining dice. “Short Rest: spent 1 d8; 1 left; HP 15/24” retains both without inventing a feature or automation.
If using a custom counter, check its recovery settings against the resource’s rule. Do not configure Hit Dice to recover on a Short Rest simply because that is when you spent them. Uses of other features may follow different rules.
Inspect the product facts and videos and current Windows offer. At your table, agree that the rest is valid, choose a spend and check both consequences before continuing the adventure.
