The difficulty is 15 and your total is 15: no extra point needed

Meeting the DC satisfies this comparison

For an ability check under the 2024 Basic Rules, a total that equals or exceeds the Difficulty Class succeeds. If the die shows 12 and applicable modifiers total +3, the result is 15. Against DC 15, you do not need 16.

The official rules distinguish the die, modifiers and target number. The DM determines targets and communicates results. This comparison is not permission to decide every action without considering the situation.

One stuck door, three numbers

In our invented example, the DM calls for a check to force a stuck door, sets DC 15 and confirms that your character’s applicable modifiers total +3. We are neither deriving a particular class build nor adding proficiency twice.

The check succeeds by that comparison. What the DM describes next depends on the situation. Do not invent that it opens every lock, avoids all noise or resolves a condition outside the requested check.

An 11 on the die with the same +3 would total 14, below this DC. These are authored arithmetic examples, not observed app rolls or probability estimates.

What to review on the sheet

Before announcing only “I rolled twelve”, separate the die face from the total. Check which ability or skill the DM requested and which modifiers apply. If a displayed value already includes a bonus, review its derivation before adding that bonus again.

DnD Dynamic Sheet documents abilities, proficiency, actions, movement and notes. This guide does not claim the app chooses the DC, knows every table rule or automatically resolves our example door. Retain any detail you need to review in a note without changing your character’s capabilities to justify a result.

Before choosing the tool

The product facts describe an available Windows x64 beta with local data and a paid one-device licence. Initial activation needs internet; later sheet and local-data use can be offline. It is not a campaign manager or shared virtual tabletop.

D&D Beyond and Shard were consulted on 25 October 2026 as other sheet and play workflows, not equivalence tests. Review demonstrations and purchase through the official site. For the next check, communicate the die, total and comparison separately.
