Initiative is a Dexterity check
Under the 2024 D&D Basic Rules, rolling Initiative means making a Dexterity check, not a saving throw. A +5 Dexterity save does not automatically become a +5 Initiative modifier. Check where each number comes from before combat begins.
DnD Dynamic Sheet manages character information. This is a manual check, not a claim that the program validates every feature or copies modifiers between fields.
One character can have two modifiers
Fictional character: Dexterity 14, a +2 modifier and a +3 Proficiency Bonus. They are proficient in Dexterity saving throws but have no other feature or effect changing Initiative.
- The Dexterity save adds +2 and +3: its modifier is +5.
- Initiative here uses the Dexterity modifier: +2.
- If the Initiative d20 shows 10, the example total is 12, not 15.
We are not removing a proficiency the character has. We are checking which kind of roll it applies to. Saving throw proficiency is not a general rule for every check using that ability.
Review character exceptions before copying the example
The official Initiative rules identify it as a Dexterity check used to order turns. Your character may have relevant features, spells or effects; read their text and agree how they apply with the DM. The +2 above belongs only to the case without those changes.
Before rolling:
- Identify that the table is asking for Initiative, rather than a save or another skill check.
- Review the character’s current Dexterity modifier.
- Read features and effects that actually apply to this check.
- Calculate the total with the die just rolled and report the result.
Do not reroll simply because another number appears when consulting the sheet: first explain what was calculated and resolve any correction with the table.
Keep the explanation beside the number
The public product facts document abilities, skills, proficiency and notes, alongside turn tracking. A manual note such as “Initiative: Dexterity +2; check active effects” can preserve the example calculation’s origin. It is not a dedicated field or an automation we claim is installed.
Updating hit points or marking an action afterwards does not itself change which modifier applied to Initiative. Keep the decisions separate so one can be reviewed without rebuilding the entire sheet.
Choose for the actual character-sheet workflow
DnD Dynamic Sheet is available as a paid Windows x64 beta. Characters are saved on the computer; initial activation requires Internet. It is neither a shared battle map nor a campaign manager. Review the demonstrations before purchasing. For the next session, check one specific number: the Initiative modifier, with a reason for adding it.
