Heroic Inspiration: that second roll can be worse

Rerolling means using the new result

Under the 2024 rules, Heroic Inspiration lets you reroll a die immediately after rolling it, but requires using the new roll. A worse result does not let you return to the original number. Distinguish this reroll from rolling with Advantage before spending the resource.

The free D&D 2024 glossary is this guide’s reference. Confirm your table’s rules version: we do not automatically extend this definition to other editions or house rules.

From four to two with the same modifier

Invented example with no Advantage, Disadvantage or other roll-changing rule: a check has DC 12 and your modifier is +5. You roll a 4 on the d20 for a total of 9. You have Heroic Inspiration and spend it immediately to reroll that die.

The new roll is 2. You must use it: 2 + 5 = 7. You cannot choose the earlier 4 because it was higher. Both totals are below 12; rerolling guaranteed neither improvement nor success.

The resource has been spent in this example. Do not retain it because you dislike the final result. Nor should you add both dice or record the higher as if this rule granted Advantage.

Make the resource visible on your sheet

The DnD Dynamic Sheet facts page documents custom counters with current and maximum values. You can prepare a manual “Heroic Inspiration 2024” counter with maximum 1 and current value reflecting your character’s resource.

For manual tracking in this example:

  1. Confirm with the table that you have the resource before using it.
  2. After spending it, reduce the counter from 1 to 0.
  3. Record the result the rule requires rather than the one you wished to keep.
  4. When a rule or the DM grants the resource again, update the record accordingly.

The counter name is your proposal, not a special application button. This guide establishes neither automatic rest recovery nor detection of when to reroll. Do not configure recovery by habit; follow the source granting the resource at your table.

Check the rule before choosing between dice

If your question concerns which of two d20s to use with Advantage, consult that rule separately. Heroic Inspiration concerns a reroll: seeing two numbers on the table does not establish the required operation.

DnD Dynamic Sheet is a paid Windows beta focused on the player’s sheet and local data. It is not a multiplayer tabletop or a replacement for table adjudication. Read current features, licensing and purchase information to decide whether its manual tracking suits you. For your next roll, agree which rule applies before updating both the result and spent resource.
