For an effect explicitly dealing half damage on a successful save, 11 damage plus Resistance to that type can leave 2: halve 11 and round down to 5, then halve 5 and round down to 2. In DnD Dynamic Sheet, update Hit Points after resolving which rules apply.
This is not stacking two Resistances
We use the 2024 D&D Basic Rules. The first reduction comes from the effect’s successful-save rule. The second comes from Resistance to the damage type. They are different reasons; multiple Resistances to the same type count only once.
The official damage rules explain half damage for specified saves, rounding down, and applying Resistance after damage adjustments. Read the actual effect first: succeeding on a save does not always mean taking half damage.
A complete sheet example
An invented situation: you have 31 current Hit Points and no Temporary Hit Points. An effect deals 11 Fire damage on a failed save and half on success. You succeeded and have Fire Resistance. No other reduction, Vulnerability or special trait applies.
- Halve for the successful save: 11 ÷ 2 = 5.5, rounded down to 5.
- Apply Fire Resistance: 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5, rounded down to 2.
- Subtract final damage from current Hit Points: 31 − 2 = 29.
Do not subtract 11 first and reconstruct two refunds afterwards. Do not retain 2.75 as final damage either; this example resolves each reduction with its required rounding.
Record the resolution without inventing automation
DnD Dynamic Sheet manages Hit Points and notes. Adjust the value to the table’s resolved result and, if useful, note “successful save + Fire Resistance: 2.” We do not claim that the sheet automatically identifies the effect, makes the save or combines reductions.
If your table gets a different result, revisit the assumptions: edition, exact effect wording, damage type and other rules. This calculation does not replace the actual spell or feature description.
The sheet is an available paid Windows beta with a one-device license. Review the public facts and examples and product page before choosing how to manage session resources.
