No proficiency? Ask about the check before ruling it out

An unmarked skill does not decide the whole scene

Lacking proficiency in a skill does not, by itself, mean you cannot make an ability check involving it. The linked Free Rules explain that you do not add your Proficiency Bonus without that proficiency. The DM decides whether a skill is relevant to the situation. Describe what you want to attempt and ask how it is resolved before turning a sheet checkbox into a universal permission or prohibition.

This article uses a tabletop assumption, not an executed DnD Dynamic Sheet test. Check your campaign’s edition and rules before applying the example.

The courtyard wall: state an intention, not an automatic roll

A fictional scene: your character wants to climb a wall to see the other side. They lack Athletics proficiency. You might say: “I want to climb up to observe the courtyard. I don’t have Athletics proficiency; how should we resolve this attempt?”

That leaves open decisions the sheet number cannot answer: whether a roll is required, which ability or skill applies and what conditions matter. It assumes no difficulty, chance of success or universal method for every wall.

Suppose the DM calls for a Strength (Athletics) check, the character has a +3 Strength modifier and no other adjustments apply. The example bonus is +3, not zero merely because proficiency is absent. A second fictional character with that proficiency and a +2 Proficiency Bonus would have +5 under otherwise identical assumptions.

These are two fictional cases. They do not grant proficiency or establish the configuration of a particular sheet.

Keep a short note of the table’s decision

A manual note might say: “Courtyard wall; DM calls for Strength (Athletics); no proficiency; +3 modifier; other adjustments checked with the table.” If the situation is unresolved, record the question still open rather than filling the gap by intuition.

DnD Dynamic Sheet documents ability modifiers, skills, proficiency, expertise, adjustments and notes. Read the public product facts and compare your character’s displayed information with the decision just made. This does not attribute an automatic referee, remote DM conversation or self-completing example record to the app.

For the separate question of distinguishing a component from an already calculated total, read the fixed-value and calculation guide. Answering that question does not determine whether an action requires a check.

Check these points before the next attempt

  1. Describe the action and its fictional objective.
  2. Ask the DM whether a check applies and which one.
  3. Check the applicable proficiency and any other conditions under your rules.
  4. Read the sheet’s bonus within those assumptions, without treating it as permission for every action.

The D&D Free Rules, consulted on 24 October 2026, provide the proficiency reference. As product alternatives, D&D Beyond presents character tools and Shard Tabletop its play environment. Their controls were not tested here and no absent feature is inferred.
