You rolled a 7 and a 16: Advantage does not mean adding both

Choose one die, then add

If a test has Advantage and your two d20s show 7 and 16, use the 16. With an applicable +3 modifier, our example totals 19. You do not add 7 + 16 + 3, and Advantage does not turn the sheet’s modifier into +6.

This invented case follows the free 2024 D&D explanation of Advantage and Disadvantage. It is not a roll performed in DnD Dynamic Sheet or a description of automatic application controls. The cover illustrates physical dice; their markings do not reproduce the example’s values.

Retain the value belonging to your character

Before resolving the test, identify the applicable modifier. Here we set it to +3 to make the arithmetic clear, without deriving it from an invented class, level or proficiency. Then confirm that Advantage applies through the relevant rule or table decision.

A record could read, “d20s: 7 and 16; chosen: 16; modifier: +3; total: 19.” The separation lets you review the sum without overwriting the base value. It also does not establish success: you still need the applicable difficulty or comparison.

Try the same example with Disadvantage

With Disadvantage, use the lower result. Keeping 7, 16 and +3 gives 7 + 3 = 10. Only the chosen die changes, not the modifier or face values.

The official 2024 rule also explains that several sources of Advantage do not add further dice, and that a roll with both Advantage and Disadvantage has neither. Check your table’s rules and individual feature details before transferring one case to another. This article does not decide when a character receives Advantage.

Use the sheet as a reference without presuming automation

The DnD Dynamic Sheet facts document abilities, skills, proficiency, actions, movement, hit points, counters and notes. Here we propose a way to read and record a calculation. We do not claim that the app rolls both dice, detects Advantage or adjudicates the test.

D&D Beyond presents its player tools, and Shard describes its adventure environment. Use these to compare workflows without assuming identical automation. DnD Dynamic Sheet focuses on a local Windows character sheet and is available as a paid beta with initial online activation; it is not a shared tabletop. Review its website and demonstrations before choosing. To try the distinction now, resolve both totals on paper and retain +3 in each.
