You receive seven healing but are missing four: do not bank the other three

At sixteen out of twenty, seven healing leaves you at twenty

If your character has 16 current Hit Points, a maximum of 20 and receives 7 healing, they regain 4 and end at 20. The other 3 are not banked for later or turned into Temporary Hit Points by that rule. Check the maximum before updating the sheet.

The healing section of the 2024 D&D Basic Rules states that regained Hit Points above the maximum are lost. This guide uses its own numbers to apply that general rule; it does not describe a particular spell or an automatic DnD Dynamic Sheet feature.

Calculate with three separate values

This invented example has no effect changing the maximum and no exception altering healing. We keep those conditions explicit rather than mixing different rules.

DetailExample value
Current Hit Points before16
Current maximum20
Healing received7
Room below maximum20 − 16 = 4
Current Hit Points afterwards20

Writing 23 would confuse the offered healing with the increase that fits within current Hit Points. Writing 20 plus 3 temporary would invent a benefit this rule does not provide. If another effect grants Temporary Hit Points, resolve its own text rather than deriving them from this calculation’s excess.

Update the sheet with the agreed result

The product facts document managing Hit Points, notes and other character resources. Use the sheet to maintain the value resolved at your table. We do not claim the app automatically caps an entry or calculates every healing event for you.

  1. Check the character’s actual current Hit Points and maximum at that moment.
  2. Identify the healing amount and applicable exceptions with the GM.
  3. Resolve the calculation; here the final value is 20, without 3 banked points.
  4. Update the value and check that the sheet retains the correct maximum.

If you already entered 23 by mistake, do not compensate by changing the maximum to 23. Review the change with the table and correct the wrong value. If you cannot remember the previous Hit Points, you need that information; do not invent an earlier state to make the arithmetic work.

Healing, maximum and Temporary Hit Points are different

This guide resolves ordinary excess healing above the current maximum. It does not decide what happens on a level increase, when a specific effect changes that maximum or when Temporary Hit Points are granted. Those situations need their own rules.

DnD Dynamic Sheet is a Windows desktop beta focused on the player’s local character sheet, not a shared tabletop or campaign manager. Initial activation needs internet; the sheet and local data can then be used offline. Review demonstrations and purchase terms on the product website before choosing it.

For the next Hit Point change, keep the three relevant numbers visible: what you have, your maximum and what you receive. In our example, receiving seven and regaining four describes the same event without banking a nonexistent benefit.
